Dr Aston has here presented a critical edition of Peirol's works, with a substantial introduction, notes and a glossary. His introduction holds a life of Peirol, a note on the manuscripts, a section on the order of the poems, notes on their style, and a bibliography. The Provencal 'Life' of the poet precedes the poems themselves, and each poem is preceded by a textual note on the manuscript (where it is available) and is followed by an English translation. Variants are given in footnotes. In an Appendix there are reproductions of manuscripts of the poems set to Peirol's own attractive melodies. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in a poet who has an important place in the golden age of Provencal poetry.
